KULIM, Apr 22 – The Advanced Materials Research Centre (AMREC), part of the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) Berhad, is committed to promoting education in composite materials and fostering industry engagement. Recently, AMREC organized a five-day short course focused on Composite Processing, specifically Filament Winding Technology. This program took place in AMREC’s auditorium in Kulim, Kedah, bringing together participants from both academia and industry to facilitate knowledge exchange and skills development in this specialized field.

The training was part of a broader composite materials course organized by AMREC and included expert-led sessions covering both theoretical and practical aspects. The event was officiated by Dr. Md Azman PKM Seeni Mohamed, the Senior Director of AMREC at SIRIM Industrial Research. He emphasized the importance of upskilling the local workforce and enhancing Malaysia’s capabilities in advanced manufacturing technologies, standards, and safety regulations.

The first two days of the course provided a solid foundation in composite theory, including an introduction to composite materials, manufacturing methods, and classical laminate theory. These sessions were conducted by two prominent academicians: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shukur Abu Hassan from the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) and Dr. Mohd Ayub Sulong from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Their lectures offered essential insights into the behavior and design of composite structures, effectively preparing participants for more advanced topics.

The highlight of the program was a dedicated session on Filament Winding Technology, an advanced manufacturing technique used to create high-strength composite structures, such as pressure vessels and tanks. This session was led by Mohamad Ariff Baharom, a senior researcher at AMREC and a pioneer in the field. Ariff shared his expertise on both the theoretical and practical aspects of filament winding, offering participants a unique opportunity to learn from a leading industry expert.

Approximately 20 participants attended the program, representing a diverse range of backgrounds, including lecturers from Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA (KKTM) Melaka and professionals from companies involved in the fabrication and repair of composite tanks. Their active participation and engagement highlighted the relevance and growing demand for specialized training within the local composites industry.

This initiative reflects SIRIM-AMREC’s ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between research and industry application, empowering professionals with cutting-edge knowledge in advanced materials processing. The success of this training marks a promising step toward further collaborative programs aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s position in high-performance composite technologies.
