UTM Professor Delivers Plenary Address at ACRS 2025 in Indonesia | Showcasing UTM’s leadership in space information technologies for global sustainability
MAKASSAR, Oct 31 – At the 46th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS 2025) in Makassar, Indonesia, Prof. Sr. Dr. Mazlan Hashim, Chairman of the UTM Professor Council (MPU) and Professor of Remote Sensing at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was invited to serve as the Second Plenary Speaker, further solidifying UTM’s position as a global leader in the field.
Attracting hundreds of attendees including scientists, technologists, business moguls, and lawmakers, the esteemed conference had the theme “Harnessing Remote Sensing for Global Sustainability.” Attendees came from an astounding 46 countries. With the goal of enhancing geospatial and remote sensing technologies throughout the Asia-Pacific region, the event provided a dynamic forum for the sharing of knowledge and collaboration.
A strong six-person delegation from UTM attended the conference, and between them they submitted ten technical papers. Professor Mazlan, who also served as the conference’s head of delegation, gave the plenary address.

During his plenary lecture, “Remote Sensing for People and Planet: From Seagrass to Global Sustainability,” Prof. Mazlan emphasised the achievements of Malaysia in environmental monitoring through satellite, smart geospatial analytics, and the incorporation of space information technologies into regional and national sustainability plans. Addressing critical issues like climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and sustainable urban development requires regional collaboration across Asia Pacific states, as emphasised in his talk.

Every year, the Asian Association on Remote Sensing (AARS) hosts one of the most significant conferences in the remote sensing industry: ACRS. Mapping and Surveying Indonesia (MAPIN) played home to the 2025 edition, which featured plenary and keynote speeches given by eminent figures in the fields of space and geoinformation.
Prof. Mazlan reflected on his involvement and stressed that UTM’s goals are in line with the worldwide sustainability agenda. He backed this claim up with four regional policy contributions on coastal biodiversity and over seven thousand citations to his work at UTM on sustainability in high-impact journals.

UTM maintains its position as a leader in the geospatial sciences by forging partnerships with other institutions to improve people’s lives, safeguard natural resources, and develop environmentally friendly technologies. Leading UTM for People and Sustainability goes forward in this way.
