or like darkness on a bottomless ocean spread with clashing billows and overcast with clouds: darkness upon darkness. If he streches out his hand he can scarcely see it. Indeed the man from whom God witholds His light shall find no light at all.
Atau (orang-orang kafir itu keadaannya) adalah umpama keadaan (orang yang di dalam) gelap-gelita di lautan yang dalam, yang diliputi oleh ombak bertindih ombak; di sebelah atasnya pula awan tebal (demikianlah keadaannya) gelap-gelita berlapis-lapis – apabila orang itu mengeluarkan tangannya, ia tidak dapat melihatnya sama sekali. Dan (ingatlah) sesiapa yang tidak dijadikan Allah menurut undang-undang peraturanNya mendapat cahaya (hidayah petunjuk) maka ia tidak akan beroleh sebarang cahaya (yang akan memandunya ke jalan yang benar).
或如重重黑暗，籠罩著汪洋大海，波濤澎湃，上有黑雲，黑暗重重疊疊，觀者伸出手來時，幾乎不見五指。真主沒有給誰光明，誰就絕無光明。
また（不信者の状態は），深海の暗黒のようなもので，波がかれらを覆い，その上に（また）波があり，その上を（更に）雲が覆っている。暗黒の上に暗黒が重なる。かれが手を差し伸べても凡んどそれは見られない。アッラーが光を与えられない者には，光はない。
[Les actions des mécréants] sont encore semblables à des ténèbres sur une mer profonde : des vagues la recouvrent, [vagues] au dessus desquelles s’élèvent [d’autres] vagues, sur lesquelles il y a [d’épais] nuages. Ténèbres [entassées] les unes au-dessus des autres. Quand quelqu’un étend la main, il ne la distingue presque pas. Celui qu’Allah prive de lumière n’a aucune lumière.
Или же они подобны мраку во глубине морской пучины. Его покрывает волна, над которой находится другая волна, над которой находится облако. Один мрак поверх другого! Если он вытянет свою руку, то не увидит ее. Кому Аллах не даровал света, тому не будет света.
Oder (sie sind) wie Finsternisse in einem abgrundtiefen Meer, das von Wogen überdeckt ist, über denen (nochmals) Wogen sind, über denen (wiederum) Wolken sind: Finsternisse, eine über der anderen. Wenn er seine Hand ausstreckt, kann er sie kaum sehen. Und wem Allah kein Licht schafft, für den gibt es kein Licht.
Oppure [le loro opere sono paragonabili] a tenebre di un mare profondo, le onde lo coprono, [onde] al di sopra delle quali si ergono [altre] onde sulle quali vi sono le nuvole. [Ammassi di] tenebre le une sulle altre, dove l’uomo che stende la mano quasi non può vederla. Per colui cui Allah non ha dato la luce, non c’è alcuna luce.
Measurements made with today’s technology have revealed that between 3 and 30 percent of the sunlight is reflected at the surface of the sea. Then, almost all of the seven colours of the light spectrum are absorbed, one after another, in the first 200 metres, except for blue light. Below a depth of 1,000 metres, there is no light at all (above picture). This scientific fact was pointed out in Surah Nur 40 in the Qur’an 1,400 years ago.
