November 20, 2024 – In a significant recognition of Malaysian expertise in renewable energy, Ts. Dr. Sathiabama T. Thirugnana, Director of UTM Ocean Thermal Energy Centre, has been appointed as Vice Chair Asia Pacific for the Ocean Thermal Energy Association (OTEA). This prestigious appointment highlights her exceptional contributions to the field of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) and renewable energy innovation in the Asia Pacific region.
Dr. Sathiabama joins the newly elected OTEA leadership team, which is tasked with accelerating the adoption of Ocean Thermal Energy technologies globally. As Vice Chair, she will play a critical role in advocating for policy, research, and development in the Asia Pacific region, furthering OTEA’s mission of creating a sustainable future through ocean-based energy solutions.

Dr. Yasuyuki Ikegami has been re-elected as Executive Committee Chair, while Professor Joel Sales Jr. has been named Vice Chair for Europe and the Americas. Other new appointments include Dan Grech, the Founder and CEO of Global OTEC, as the UK Delegate.
This announcement precedes the upcoming 10th OTEC Symposium, scheduled for December 4-5 in Rio de Janeiro. The symposium will bring together global experts, researchers, and industry leaders to showcase the latest advancements in OTEC technology and explore policy and project developments driving the renewable energy transition worldwide.
Dr. Sathiabama’s appointment not only underscores her individual achievements but also places Malaysia prominently on the map of global renewable energy innovation.
