UTM aspires to be a world-class institution of academia and technological excellence. IC5G is a testament of a successful public-private partnership to ensure Malaysia is on the right path to be digitally transformed by 2020. Together with Ericsson, the aim of this center is to foster the development of 5G technology and use cases in Malaysia. This will also prepare future generations to be more tecology competent and employable in the new digital economy through specifically tailored learning modules with experts from Ericsson and UTM.
History
❖16 December 2017 – UTM-ERICSSON IC5G is the first collaboration between Ericsson and Higher Education Institute with respect to R&D in 5G Technology for South East Asia region. The first of its kind in Malaysia, IC5G is located in UTM’s Kuala Lumpur campus. The centre features 5G innovations, a 5G research lab as well as 5G learning space.
❖The opening of the center follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Ericsson and UTM through its Wireless Communication Centre (WCC) in October, 2015. Both parties have agreed to undertake activities that will facilitate research linkages, trade and information exchange in order to work on joint research projects, and to realize the impact of 5G on industries and society. Launched by the Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh, Minister of Higher Education, the center will help drive the nation towards becoming the hub for competence and innovation for 5G.
❖Through this academia-industry partnership, researchers from both UTM and Ericsson will join hand in hand in contributing towards the development of 5G industry, specifically for the Malaysian context. It is a project of national significance for the economy and people of the country.
