Our History
Centre for Sustainable Nanomaterials (CSNano), formerly known as Ibnu Sina Institute for Fundamental Science Studies (IIS), was established in 1997. In year 2014, under rebranding pogram managed by UTM DVCRI’s office, we had been proposed to change the name that related to our niche area, nanomaterials. The initial idea was to merge 6 research centres under 1 research institute. In year 2015, we are officially known as CSNano, one of the 6 CoEs under Ibnu Sina Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (ISISIR). Over the years, our management office and research laboratories was located at Building N31, Ibnu Sina Institute, but starting in year 2020, we are officially relocated at Buliding T02, Faculty of Science, UTM Johor Bahru.
With these realization, the new director, who was appointed in 2019, took the initiative to embark on a rebranding process. It was the time for a fresh brand. We have organized a workshop planning the activities and rebranding program for the year 2020 – 2022. Through these processes, our staffs and members learnt more about what CSNano meant to us. Hopefully our long and tough journey, will paid off in the coming years.
CSNano is a vital segment that seeks to comprehend the scientific knowledge towards achieving our goal. CSNano emphasizes on frontier science research activities; directly applying basic knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology to facilitate the advancement of local technology, engineering and material discoveries; in pursuit of scientific advances through interdisciplinary programs and collaborations.
The research undertaken by CSNano will provide the education and training of researchers preparing to meet the scientific challenges of the future, in tandem with the Malaysian goal of having world class scientists; equivalent to Nobel Laureates by the year 2020. The research centre is designed to accommodate a series of chemistry, physics and biology laboratories equipped with sophisticated scientific equipment. As a applied science research centre, CSNano encourages and embraces cooperative collaborative and interdisciplinary research among the scientists and technologists alike.
CSNano strives to be a leading nanomaterials research centre in the region, the meeting place of the “great minds” and the facilitator for future local scientific discoveries. This is to be achieved by CSNano adhering to the highest standards, with a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving towards the perpetuation of knowledge through education and reputation for research excellence, which provides an unparalleled scientific environment. The pursuit of scientific excellence is paramount and all efforts are directed towards that end.
