Antibacterial Agents

Edited by: Nik Ahmad Nizam Nik Malek

Description

This book comprises of 13 chapters focusing on issues and development of antibacterial agents. The content is divided into two main segments, focusing on issues and types of antibacterial agents. The types of antibacterial agents discussed in this book can be divided into three main groups which are (1) organic including essential oils, natural products and nanofiber, (2) inorganic including biosynthesized silver nanoparticles, metal-loaded zeolites and kaolinites, carbon nanotubes and titania, and (3) hybrid organic-inorganic including organo-modified metal-loaded zeolite and metal-organic-framework. Chapters in this book present research and reviews on development of these antibacterial agents in terms of their fundamental principles, characteristics, antibacterial assays and mechanisms. This book provides guidelines to researchers, scientists or professionals from industries who are involved in developing new antibacterial agents.

Removal of Heavy Metals by Low-Cost Adsorption Materials (Chapter)

Authored by: Siew-Teng. Ong , Sie-Tiong Ha , Pei-Sin Keng , Siew-Ling Lee , Yung-Tse Hung

Handbook of Advanced Industrial and Hazardous Wastes Management (Book)

Abstract

Owing to the environmental impact as well as the growing awareness among the public, it is imperative to remove or reduce the concentration of heavy metals to environmentally acceptable levels before being discharged to open stream. The conventional methods for removing heavy metals suffer from many drawbacks such as high cost, sludge disposal problem, complex technology, and limited applicability. Therefore, intensive research has been carried out using low-cost materials to remove these heavy metals at an affordable cost. This chapter examines (i) some commonly found heavy metals in wastewater, (ii) main treatment technologies and their limitations, (iii) various studies using waste materials from agriculture and industry or naturally occurring biosorbents, (iv) chemical properties and characterization studies on the low-cost adsorbents, (v) influential parameters in affecting the removal efficiency, and (vi) equilibrium, kinetic models, and process design used in the adsorption process.
