Institute of Human Centered Engineering (iHumEn), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia, in collaboration with IJN-UTM Cardiovascular Engineering Centre, Media and Game Innovation Centre of Excellence (MaGICX), Medical Devices and Technology Centre (MEDiTEC) and Sports Innovation & Technology Centre (SITC) have successfully organized the Human Centered Technology Symposium 2021. Due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, this symposium was organized virtually through the CISCO WEBEX platform, with a live broadcast of the keynote session.

The motivation for enabling this symposium is to provide a platform for researchers to share their current research thoughts, findings and outputs in the areas related to humans and technology. The HumEnTech symposium welcomes participation from 10 research areas to gather experts for knowledge and technology enhancement. The research areas highlighted in this symposium are human-computer interaction, assistive technology, sports technology, rehabilitation, health informatics, human factors, nutritional technology, artificial intelligence for human technology, and ergonomics.

The event begins with the opening address by Dr Syafiqah Saidin, Program Director of HumEnTech Symposium 2021, followed by a launching speech by Prof Dr Mohd Shahrizal Sunar, Institute Director of iHumEn.

The invited speaker delivered a memorable keynote session, Prof Ir Dr Siti Anom Ahmad, Director of Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing (MyAgeing) from Universiti Putra Malaysia. Her sharing on ‘Fall and Balance Monitoring System: Prevention and Detection for Older Persons’ have exposed the participants and listeners to current technologies in dealing with the old-age community. After the keynote session, the symposium continued with the plenary session and the closing and award presentation.

In this symposium, ten participants have participated orally in presenting their research outputs related to humans and technology. Eight participants were coming from UTM, one participant was from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), and another was from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). The plenary session was done smoothly with significant participation and engagement from fellow researchers and participants through a question and answer session. In addition, to bring more value to the authors, all submitted articles will be published in the Journal of Human Centered Technology (HumEnTech), the journals under Penerbit UTM Press.

The symposium ended with the closing remarks by Dr Syafiqah Saidin, Program Director of the HumEnTech Symposium and the award ceremony. The award recipients of HumEnTech Symposium 2021 are as follows:
