Conducting safety and health audits in the workplace or a construction site can identify and help to eliminate workplace hazards. The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH) was created to encourage safer workplace conditions. The Institute of Human Centered Engineering (iHumEn), one of the well-known research institutes in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), has performed a physical audit led by Assoc Prof Dr Mohamad Wijayanuddin Ali with a team of Occupational Safety and Health auditors.
Physical audits of the OSHE management are conducted to determine whether iHumEn complies with the OSHE legal requirements or standards and to review and evaluate the performance and effectiveness of OSHE. It is essential to identify problems, risks, and non-compliance and monitor the implementation of non-compliance reports that have been issued.
Five auditors visited iHumEn’s office and several Research Centers for evaluation and evidence-gathering sessions. The Occupational Safety and Health Audit evaluation session lasted from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.
iHumEn also conducted an internal assessment that was held on 18 April 2022. The internal auditors consisted of fellows, fellow assistants, and iHumEn staff. With the internal evaluation, it is hoped that the infrastructure and building and the workspace can be further improved to provide optimal comfort to the UTM community, thus ensuring the workspace is always safe, healthy, and conducive to staff, students and visitors.
