Knowing basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can save lives. Knowing how to do CPR can mean the difference between life and death. Emergencies can strike at any time, and it may take several minutes before help arrives.
To provide detailed and insightful content on basic first aid and CPR among UTM staff, IJNÂUTM CEC in its initiative has successfully organized the basic first aid and CPR on 7th July 2022 at the Building of VOl, UTM. The course content was delivered by the invited speaker, Dr. Firdaus Akmal, a medical practitioner from the Health Centre (PKU), UTM. Throughout this training, participants were taught basic life support skills such as CPR, choking, and other first aid related topics such as bleeding & wounds, burns & scald, and fracture & spinal injuries.
The program consists of a theory presentation, practical session, and life-like simulation to equip the participants with not only knowledge but also the skill to handle various emergencies.
In addition, participants also were introduced to other first aid and CPR techniques including Heimlich Maneuver, it can be applied for someone who is choking and able to dislodge whatever it is that is blocking the airways to save someone’s life or prevent potential brain damage.
Other than that, the technique of how to set a splint, stop the bleeding, treat a burn, spot a concussion, support a sprain, and suture and stitches were exposed and explained.
For IJN-UTM CEC, basic first aid and CPR skills shall be learned by everyone as it encourages healthy and safe living. Knowledge of first aid promotes a sense of safety and well-being among people. It is believed that a trained person is competent to assess their surroundings. Having an awareness and desire to be accident-free keeps everyone safer and reduces the number of causalities and accidents.
