The Institute of Human Centered Engineering (iHumEn) has organized a Good Laboratory Safety Practice Training on 25 Oct 2021. iHumEn conducted the training virtually through the Cisco Webex platform. The event began with a welcoming address by Prof Dr Mohd Shahrizal Sunar, Institute Director of iHumEn, followed by a briefing session by Dr Nor Suriani Sani, Senior Research Officer of iHumEn. At the same time, Mr Mohd Syahmi and Mr Mohd Faiz from Permula Sdn Bhd have been invited as trainers for this event.
Permula Sdn Bhd, established in 1985, specializes in laboratory equipment, safety and medical equipment and consumables. The trainer has shared the practical steps in good laboratory safety practice, including hazard and risk identification. It is essential to understand the long term or short term side effects of hazards towards a healthy lifestyle. Users should wisely choose suitable self-protective safety tools and consumables, know the method of use, care and maintain the laboratory equipment effectively.
In addition, a laboratory poses potential risks due to exposure to corrosive and toxic materials, flammable solvents, high-pressure gases, explosive chemicals and dangerous microbes. Excellent attention and adherence to prescribed safety guidelines will help avoid laboratory misconduct or accidents in the laboratory, for example, by wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), proper chemical handling and being skilled in using laboratory equipment.
For iHumEn, good laboratory safety practice is an essential component taken into action. It’s also a part of the responsibility that the authority and everyone who deals with laboratory works and purposes should be addressed. Besides, it helps and supports the iHumEn members, staff, and UTM to be aware and practice the proper safety laboratory protocols efficiently.
