UMW Holdings Berhad (UMW) is a Malaysia-based industrial enterprise, serving the economies of Malaysia and Asia-Pacific region. The company is known for being one of the key players in multiple industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, engineering, equipment and many more. Its trailing twelve months revenue exceed RM11 billion and its workforce numbers more than 7,000 employees serving customers through a nationwide distribution network.

With a mission to deliver excellence and sustained value creation for their stakeholders through products and services, UMW was looking for more ways to improve its employees’ health, safety and environment (HSE), so it can give better products, services and value to customers. Its main concern at that time was the ability to quickly identify workplace hazards, since as a multi-national cross-industrial enter- prise, with very diverse and dynamic working environments, early intervention can often be the difference between life and fatal, safety and danger, health and sickness. Another issue was the manual labour involved in updating and responding to real-time events that not only cause costly delays, but also affects productivity.

To UMW, an easier-to-use and more user-friendly HSE system means more time and convenience for the employees. Those extra time can be better used for other things that are good for business, or at least give everyone in the company a peace of mind.

This leads to the development of an inte- grated HSE software by UTM MaGICX that is industry-ready and IR4.0-aligned. The project includes software design, implementation, inte- gration and testing. The software needs to be easily accessible, must allow real-time update, and cater UMW sites and premises.

Thanks to the HSE 4.0 software, the company can significantly improve the workforce health, safety and environment in many ways, complying the international standard OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001.

For starters, they can now quickly identify workplace hazards. This, in turn, significantly reduces workplace accident rate since it minimizes human error, preventing fatalities and non-fatal injuries. Moreover, it increases productivity, saves time, and saves more money in the long run.

Next, it generally contributes to a healthier workforce. With the integration of this HSE 4.0 software, besides just monitoring the environment safety, it can also monitor and assess employees’ health issues, so the company can make better decisions for further action. The most prominent hazard in this category is communicable diseases such as cold and flu. In the long run, the employees can perform better and stay with the company longer, and the company can deal with less people leaving the company due to sickness or illness.

In brief, as a billion-dollar company housing more than 7,000 employees worldwide, UMW was looking for ways to provide better health, safety and environment for their valuable staff. One of the pressing concerns was the time taken to identify workplace hazards in their premise, as they are a multi-industrial company with many premises and diverse working environment. Other concerns were accident rates, lost time injuries, productivity, proper documentation, swift communication and cost-efficiency.

After a series of engagement, UTM MaGICX developed an integrated HSE software for UMW that is easily accessible, allows real-time update, and caters UMW sites and premises worldwide. This comprehensive HSE software allows them to quickly identifying workplace hazards, greatly reduce accident rate, drastically minimize human error, significantly increase productivity, document and communicate about HSE online in real-time and save a lot of time and money in the long run.
