On 18 September 2024, the Faculty of Sciences and Technology at Universitas Airlangga (Unair) hosted an event attended by the Program of Biomedical Technology, chaired by Prof. Dr. Suryani Dyah Astuti. The event featured expert talks from distinguished speakers, including Assoc Prof. Ir. Dr. Ardiyansyah Syahrom, ASEAN.Eng, who presented on “A Novel Approach to Personalized Temporary Implant: Degradable Orthopaedic Implant Produced from Biodegradable Metal,” Dr. Norhana Jusoh, who discussed “Fabrication Strategies Towards the Development of Pre-Vascularized Bone Scaffold,” and Assoc Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Nor Hasrul Akhmal Ngadiman, who spoke on “Additive Manufacturing for Medical Devices Application.”
The Program of Biomedical Technology at Universitas Airlangga (Unair) is part of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology. Established in 2008, this undergraduate program aims to produce professionals skilled in ensuring the functionality of advanced medical equipment in healthcare services. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the healthcare industry and includes three main areas of specialization: medical instrumentation and biomechanical engineering, biomedical informatics, and tissue engineering and artificial organs. The program emphasizes a blend of engineering and biomedical sciences, fostering innovation and excellence at both national and international levels. Students are trained to solve engineering problems in healthcare applications, with a strong focus on biomedical instrumentation systems, biomechanical engineering, biomedical informatics, and tissue and artificial organ engineering. Graduates are equipped with the skills to work as practitioners, researchers, entrepreneurs, and managers in the healthcare sector, capable of effective communication, leadership, and ethical decision-making. The program also offers opportunities for hands-on experience through various student activities and research projects, preparing students for successful careers in biomedical technology.
The event concluded with discussions on potential research collaborations, sharing of facilities, matching grants, joint publications, further studies, and joint supervision. The research collaboration aims to foster a synergistic partnership between the Program of Biomedical Technology at Universitas Airlangga and the invited experts, focusing on sharing facilities to provide access to advanced equipment and resources, securing matching grants to support joint research initiatives, co-authoring scientific papers to produce high-quality publications, and offering opportunities for further study and joint supervision of postgraduate students to enhance their research experience and outcomes. These collaborative efforts are designed to advance the field of biomedical technology, leveraging the strengths of each institution to achieve innovative and impactful research outcomes. The collaboration will explore several specific areas, including the development of personalized temporary implants using degradable orthopedic materials, as presented by Assoc Prof. Ir. Dr. Ardiyansyah Syahrom. Another focus will be on creating pre-vascularized bone scaffolds through advanced fabrication strategies, as discussed by Dr. Norhana Jusoh. Additionally, the collaboration will delve into the use of additive manufacturing techniques for producing medical devices, as highlighted by Assoc Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Nor Hasrul Akhmal Ngadiman. These research areas aim to leverage innovative materials and manufacturing processes to advance biomedical technology, ultimately improving medical treatments and patient outcomes.
