If off-campus communities were asked to name five research universities in the country, it would not be possible for many to do so. In the eyes of the public, all universities are the same, just the name is different. However, there are some differences that need to be clarified, including the role of research universities that the public must understand. The concept of a research university is not new. At Overseas, all the world’s leading universities such as Harvard, MIT, Oxford and Cambridge are research universities. In principle it can be said that research universities are institutions of higher learning that make research and innovation the core of the mission.
In Malaysia, under the definition of the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), there are currently five research universities. Ia meliputi tiga di Lembah Klang iaitu Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) dan Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) serta dua di luar Lembah Klang; Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) dan Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
