Development of membrane technology for reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, membrane contactor, gas separation and development of nanofibers and carbon nanostructured materials for energy related application.

Professor Ismail has been the Founder and Head of Advanced Membrane Technology Research Center (AMTEC). This center is focused on research in development of membrane technology for reverse osmosis, nanofiltration and ultrafiltration for water and wastewater treatment including desalination, membrane contactor, gas separation and development of nanofibers and carbon nanostructured materials for energy related application.

Professor Ismail has published more than 100 articles in refereed publications. His work has also been published widely in refereed international conference proceedings and invited book chapters. He has also developed strong international links with renowned researchers worldwide. Linkages with industries have also developed and a number of contract researches from industries have been secured.

Professor Ismail has been the founding chairman of the ASEAN Membrane Science and Technology Society which have been organizing the International Conference Membrane Science and Technology for the past 8 years. He has also been invited to act as a member of the scientific committees in international conferences and delivered in numerous plenary, keynote and invited lectures internationally. He is also on the Editorial Board Member for Desalination journal, Membrane Water Treatment, Journal of Rubber Research, Jurnal Teknologi and the advisory panel for Institution of Engineers Malaysia journal. He has also been on the panel of referee for the research proposal in Belgium, USA and Middle East and for more than 20 international journals.

In the year 2000, Professor Ismail won the ASEAN Young Scientist and Technologist Award and Malaysian Young Scientist Award. He has also won more than 60 awards based on his research output of which 24 are at the international level.

Professor Ismail has also received the Prime Minister Initiative Award (PMI2) for Strategic Alliances and Partnership Project, a two years research grant in collaboration with Imperial College, London, sponsored by The British Council.

In 2009, Professor Ismail was awarded the Grand Prize Winner for the National Intellectual Property in Patent Category and the National Innovation Award winner in the Waste to Wealth Category.
